In short
For review platforms and merchants, Proof of Actor is designed to support review signals such as Verified Human Review and Verified Buyer + Verified Human: evidence that a real, present person wrote a review, combined with the platform's own proof of purchase.
The question
Was this review written by a real person who actually bought the product?
Context
Purchase is not authorship
"Verified purchase" proves a transaction occurred. It does not prove who wrote the review, whether a human wrote it at all, or whether one person is writing on behalf of many accounts.
Detecting AI-generated text after the fact is unreliable and adversarial. Establishing who is acting at the moment of writing is a different, more tractable question.
Proof of Actor is designed to add the actor layer to the purchase layer, so platforms can show readers something more meaningful than a star count.
Review trust problems
- AI-generated reviews at scale
- One actor operating many reviewer accounts
- Incentivised reviews written by third parties
- Reviews posted by agents without disclosure
What Proof of Actor is designed to establish
Trust layers this context needs
Each context asks for a different slice of the trust stack. These are the layers that matter here.
Personhood
A real human wrote the review.
Presence
They were present when it was written.
AI participation
Material AI authorship is visible.
Identity
Optionally linked privately to the verified buyer.
Policy

Frequently asked questions
How can platforms tell if a review is AI-generated?
Judging text alone is unreliable. Proof of Actor is designed to establish who was acting when the review was written: a present human, with AI participation graded and visible, which is a more robust basis for a badge.
Is Verified Human Review available?
Not yet. It is a concept the brief describes for the future. Proof of Actor is in development, and these badges illustrate what the infrastructure is designed to support.
Would reviewers have to reveal their identity?
No. A review can be verified as written by a real human with identity undisclosed to readers and to the platform beyond what it needs.
