Human, Human + AI, AI Agent: make agency explicit on social platforms

AI does not need to disappear from social media. It needs to become attributable. Platforms that can label who or what is posting give users the context to decide what to trust.

In short

For social networks, Proof of Actor is designed to let platforms distinguish and label accounts and interactions as Human, Human + AI or AI Agent, backed by evidence and an accountable principal for agents, rather than guessing from behaviour.

The question

Is this account, post or reply coming from a human, a human using AI, or an AI agent, and who stands behind it?

Context

Agency without disguise

Social platforms already host a mix of people, people using AI tools, brand automation and autonomous agents. When none of it is labelled, users cannot calibrate trust, coordinated inauthentic behaviour hides in the noise, and honest automation is treated the same as manipulation.

Blanket bans on automation are neither enforceable nor desirable. What users need is explicit agency: a clear, verifiable signal about the kind of actor they are dealing with.

Proof of Actor's four Actor states map directly to labels a platform could choose to show, with the platform deciding where each is welcome.

Where explicit agency helps

  • Replies and comments at scale from undisclosed AI
  • Networks of accounts operated by one actor
  • Brand and service accounts run by agents
  • Public polls and engagement metrics

What Proof of Actor is designed to establish

Trust layers this context needs

Each context asks for a different slice of the trust stack. These are the layers that matter here.

Personhood

A real human stands behind human-labelled accounts.

AI participation

AI involvement is graded and visible.

Delegation

Agent accounts identify their principal.

Accountability

Someone stands behind automated speech.

Policy

Typical labels

Proof of Actor supplies the evidence. Your organisation sets and discloses the policy.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Would every user have to verify their identity?

No. Personhood and identity are separate layers. A platform could label an account as a verified human with identity undisclosed.

Is labelling AI-assisted posts a penalty?

It should not be. HUMAN + AI is a legitimate state. The aim is transparency so readers have context, not punishment for using tools.

How would agent accounts be accountable?

Through Proof of Authority: an agent account is designed to carry a verified principal, so automated activity always has someone standing behind it.
